Mississippi Administrative Services, Inc. is one of the oldest and largest
third party administrators in the South. At MAS, it is our goal to provide
quality service at an affordable cost through partially self-funded medical
plans.
Over the last twenty years, health insurance premiums and medical costs
have risen to a formidable high, thus resulting in greater costs to the
company and lesser benefits for its employees.
The Concept of Partial Self-Funding
Generally, insurance companies assume risk: the greater the risk, the
greater the cost of the insurance. A substantial amount of money can be
saved if employers are able to manage their own risks.
Medical insurance cost is composed of two distinct segments of exposure:
predictable risk and unpredictable risk.
A company with a solid financial background and steady claims experience
should not insure the risk that it can afford to pay. Therefore, the Partially
Self-Funded Medical Plan allows the employer to assume the predictable
risk. To provide protection against unpredictable risk or catastrophic
claims, the employer insures that risk with a reinsurance company.
